Student mistakes: linear perspective

  • February 9, 2023

What’s wrong with this picture?

  • The lines to the lowest point are separated in different directions.
  • Necessary to work out the lines with a thin 0.3 pencil to bring all the lines into standard form.
  • The lines should be neat and thin, like hair. They shouldn’t diverge in different directions.

Linear perspective is technique artists use to create the illusion of depth and space using the relative size and position of a group of objects. To achieve this effect, there are three essential components needed in creating a painting or drawing using linear perspective:

  • Orthogonal (also known as parallel lines)
  • Vanishing point
  • Horizon line
Using these components, it is possible to arrange the composition of a work of art in a way similar to how the human eye sees the world.
