Student mistakes:  proportion

  • January 20, 2023

What’s wrong with this picture?

  • Defects in line thickness and proportions. Because of this, the volume is poorly visualized. There is no perception of space.

Proportions tell you how big something is relative to another object.

You should indicate with temporary, light marks how tall objects are, how wide they are, and where they are correctly located in your drawing.

Things you should be doing when starting a drawing:

  • Spend more time looking/measuring, and less time drawing
  • Assign numbers to the sizes of objects
  • Consider the spaces in between objects
  • Draw lightly to start
  • Use dots, lines, and simple geometric shapes to indicate the presence of objects
  • Re-measure using several different reference objects
  • Previous Student mistakes: drawing volume
  • Next Student mistakes: shading
